A recent study conducted by MediBuddy, a digital healthcare platform, has revealed a silent health crisis unfolding in India, with over 57% of corporate men and nearly 50% of women suffering from vitamin B12 deficiency. The study, which analysed data from around 4,400 urban corporate employees, cited inadequate dietary intake as the main cause of the rise in deficiency levels among men and women. Vitamin B12 is primarily found in animal products, making vegetarians particularly vulnerable.
Dietitian Vidhi Chawla noted that lifestyle factors such as frequent consumption of over-processed foods, alcohol, and excess caffeine, as well as high stress levels, can significantly reduce B12 absorption in the body. Early warning signs of B12 deficiency include chronic fatigue, muscle weakness, memory problems, mood swings, and dizziness.
A sedentary lifestyle and work stress were identified as contributing factors to worsening B12 deficiency. Dr. Archana Batra emphasized the importance of incorporating B12-rich foods into daily meals, reducing caffeine and alcohol consumption, taking short breaks at work, managing stress, and staying hydrated to reverse deficiency.
Experts recommend an annual vitamin B12 test, especially for vegetarians, individuals experiencing chronic fatigue, or those with digestive issues, to ensure early detection and timely intervention. By making small dietary and lifestyle changes, individuals can effectively address B12 deficiency and improve their overall health and well-being.
