Euronews Culture’s Film of the Week: ‘Emmanuelle’ – A Classic Icon of Sensuality

French director Audrey Diwan recently released her adaptation of the classic erotic novel Emmanuelle, which failed to make a splash at both Cannes and Venice film festivals. Diwan’s version, which aims to update the original story with a modern feminist perspective, falls short of expectations and lacks the sensuality and impact of the original 70s film.

Starring NoƩmie Merlant as Emmanuelle, the film follows a 35-year-old hotel quality controller on a trip to China, where she embarks on a series of sexual encounters that leave her unfulfilled. The film attempts to explore female desire and agency but ultimately comes across as dispassionate and aimless.

While Diwan’s film avoids the misogyny of the original, it fails to capture the sensuality that made the 1974 adaptation such a success. The lackluster dialogue and sanitized sex scenes result in a film that feels flat and unengaging. The lack of chemistry between the characters and the absence of a compelling narrative contribute to the overall disappointment of the film.

Despite Diwan’s previous success with Happening, her latest film Emmanuelle fails to live up to expectations and ultimately falls short of delivering a compelling and engaging story. The lack of eroticism and emotional depth make this adaptation a forgettable experience that pales in comparison to its predecessor.
