A small plane crash in Michigan’s Lake Huron 17 years ago has finally been resolved with the discovery of the remains of passenger H. Brooke Stauffer Jr., who had been missing since 2007. The plane vanished while en route from Mackinac Island to Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, with the remains of the pilot, Karen Dodds, found shortly after the crash. Stauffer’s remains were discovered by a private search team in August 2024 near Bois Blanc Island after years of unsuccessful searches by authorities. Stauffer, a prolific writer and author, was the director of standards and safety for the National Electrical Contractors Association, while Dodds ran her own graphic web design and marketing company. The search and recovery efforts were initiated by family members in October 2023, leading to the long-awaited closure for loved ones. The Center for Forensic Anthropology at Northern Michigan University confirmed Stauffer’s identity with the help of dental records. The discovery of the plane wreckage and Stauffer’s remains has brought an end to a chapter of uncertainty and sadness for all those involved.
