Michigan’s 988 crisis hotline fields over 88,000 calls in 2022, reports 9&10 News

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is celebrating the success of the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, which has answered over 88,000 calls from Michigan residents since its launch in 2022. The lifeline, previously known as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, provides 24/7 support for individuals in crisis, offering help for suicidal ideation, mental health and substance use crises, and emotional distress.

Michigan’s 988 Lifeline receives around 9,000 calls per month, with an average wait time of just 17 seconds. The data shows that over 48% of callers initially reported high or overwhelming stress, which was reduced to 12% by the end of the call after speaking with a specialist. The lifeline connects callers to behavioral health services, resources, and referrals for follow-up care.

Specialized services are available for veterans, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and other groups, and Language Line Solutions offers translation services in over 250 languages. While text and chat services are currently only available in English, crisis center calling services are offered in both English and Spanish.

The director of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Elizabeth Hertel, emphasizes the importance of strengthening crisis care and mental health services in the state, encouraging anyone in crisis to utilize the 988 Lifeline whenever needed.
