The small town bookstore, Serendipity Books, in Chelsea, Michigan, received a heartwarming surprise when around 300 residents formed a “book brigade” to help move the store to a new location. The volunteers created lines to pass off each of the 9,100 titles from the old store to the new building down the block, significantly speeding up the moving process compared to using a moving company. Owner Michelle Tuplin was overwhelmed by the support and gratitude for the community effort.
The move was captured in a touching video posted on Instagram, showing residents of all ages passing books one by one with the song “Everyday People” playing in the background. The volunteers shared their excitement as they handled the books, often commenting on which ones they had or hadn’t read.
Tuplin, who has owned the store since 2017, had been planning the move since January and has only three part-time workers helping her. Employee Kaci Friss, a local resident, emphasized the incredible support Serendipity Books received, highlighting the close-knit nature of the Chelsea community.
The video showcased the unity and kindness of the Michigan residents who came together to support their beloved bookstore, illustrating the strong bond and camaraderie among the small town population. As the final book was put on the shelf, the volunteers’ efforts demonstrated the power of community and the importance of supporting local businesses.
