Review of evidence reveals government’s weak case against Mahmoud Khalil, heavily relying on tabloid accounts

Former Columbia University student Mahmoud Khalil, facing deportation, has filed evidence challenging the government’s case against him. The government’s claims against Khalil are called into question by discrepancies in timelines and reliance on unverified tabloid articles about him. Khalil’s legal team asserts that he was arrested for protected speech and his role in pro-Palestinian activism, rather than the government’s allegations of supporting Hamas and making Jewish students feel unsafe.

The Trump administration alleges Khalil lied on his U.S. residency application forms and participated in political activism, targeting him alongside other international students. Immigration Judge Jamee Comans ruled that Khalil can be deported if deemed a threat to U.S. foreign policy by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Rubio labeled Khalil’s activities as antisemitic, but Khalil’s legal team presented evidence refuting this accusation.

The government’s case includes mischaracterizations of Khalil’s work history, citing incomplete employment information from documents in Khalil’s permanent residency application. Khalil’s connection to UNRWA and CUAD was also misconstrued, as he completed an internship at UNRWA and worked with CUAD as part of a coalition of groups at Columbia.

Khalil’s legal team has until April 23 to file for relief, allowing him to remain in the U.S. until then. The case highlights discrepancies in the government’s evidence and raises concerns about the targeting of international students engaged in political activism.
