Northern Michigan University football head coach Shane Richardson has announced the addition of Elijah Fernandez to his coaching staff as the running backs coach and recruiting coordinator. Fernandez brings experience from his previous roles as a running backs coach at Edinboro University and quality control coach at William & Mary. He also served as a wide receivers coach at Virginia University of Lynchburg. Fernandez graduated from Liberty University with a bachelor’s degree in coaching, sport, event & tourism management in 2022.
Richardson expressed his excitement for Fernandez joining the program, citing his enthusiasm and dedication to doing things at a high level. Fernandez will play a key role in recruiting high school coaches and prospects to find the best fits for the Wildcats’ football program.
Northern Michigan University has struggled in recent seasons, going 0-11 in each of Richardson’s first two seasons. Despite playing against nationally ranked teams annually, the Wildcats had their closest call last fall, losing in overtime to GLIAC newcomer Roosevelt.
Fernandez’s experience at Edinboro University includes overseeing a backfield that scored 28 touchdowns and defeating Division I Robert Morris. With his background in coaching and recruiting, Fernandez is poised to make a significant impact on the future of Wildcat football.
