Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has launched a trade trip to Europe with the aim of attracting new investments and fostering trade relationships with key economies such as the U.K. and Ireland. This comes at a time of U.S. tariff tensions with various nations, including recent tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on Canada and Mexico, raising concerns about the impact on American businesses.
Whitmer’s trip, her second to Europe in less than four months, is part of efforts to promote investment opportunities in Michigan’s economy. Joined by Michigan Economic Development Corporation officials, the delegation plans to meet with business leaders, government officials, and industry stakeholders to showcase why Michigan is an ideal destination for investment and partnership.
The delegation will visit European companies with a presence in Michigan, such as GlenDimplex Group, Perrigo, and Glanbia, and hold roundtable discussions with Midlands Aerospace Alliance, Enterprise Ireland, and the American Chamber of Commerce. The visit will also include meetings with elected officials in the U.K. and Ireland to discuss natural resource management, sustainability, and tourism.
Michigan Department of Natural Resources Director Scott Bowen emphasized the importance of international partnerships and opportunities to learn from natural resource management practices in other parts of the world. Overall, the trade trip aims to enhance Michigan’s economic resilience in the global market and create new opportunities for businesses and workers in the state.
