Detroit, MI – With spring-like weather finally making an appearance in Metro Detroit, it is important to start thinking about severe weather safety as Michigan’s Severe Weather Awareness Week approaches.
The National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac will be conducting a Michigan Statewide Tornado Drill on Wednesday, March 19th, 2025 using NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards. The drill, which will cover all counties in Southeastern Michigan, is set to take place around 1:00 PM EDT.
Residents are encouraged to practice their tornado precautions and safety plans during the drill. It is important to note that the drill will not trigger the Emergency Alert System like an actual Tornado Warning would. NOAA Weather Radio Alarm Tones will be activated using the Required Weekly Test code, with a special broadcast to indicate the tornado drill.
It is crucial to understand the difference between a Tornado Watch and Tornado Warning, and to take appropriate action in each scenario. Tornado Safety Tips are provided for various situations, such as at home, at school, in public buildings, out in open country or fields, and in mobile homes.
Residents are advised to stay informed through local news sources like WDIV Local 4 News and to have a plan in place in case of severe weather. Remember to take shelter in a basement or interior rooms, away from windows, and to avoid trying to outrun a tornado if caught in the open country or fields.
