A mentorship program in partnership with a northern Michigan ski resort is providing students from Hamtramck High School with the opportunity to experience life up north. The program, led by non-profits SOS Outreach and Crystal Community Ski Club, aims to mentor students and teach them winter sports skills. After a year in the program, students are rewarded with a trip to Crystal Mountain in Benzie County.
For many students, particularly those who have immigrated to the United States or are first-generation, learning a new sport like skiing has been a unique and exciting opportunity. This experience has not only exposed them to a new activity but has also helped them build confidence and form strong bonds with their peers and mentors.
The program’s ultimate goal is to give back to the students in hopes that they will one day give back to others. By creating a supportive community and providing positive life experiences, the program is helping students develop valuable life skills and relationships.
