Huron County Crime: Poker Champion Alleged Mastermind of $3.2 Million Fraud Scheme

Huron County man accused of running $3.2 million fraud scheme after claiming abduction

According to the FBI, George Janssen of Huron County, who is a nationally ranked poker champion and prominent car dealer in Bay City, is now facing charges of financial institution fraud totaling $3.2 million. This comes after Janssen claimed to have been abducted and held captive for 35 days in the Toledo area in December of 2023.

Authorities found Janssen along a rural Huron County roadway with his hands zip-tied together at the end of his alleged ordeal. He had claimed that his captors were trying to extort a large sum of money from him and had driven him from Toledo back to Huron County to find money that he had allegedly stashed on hunting property.

However, the FBI launched an investigation and determined that Janssen had actually defrauded friends and financial institutions out of $3.2 million. He is now facing one count of financial institution fraud in U.S. District Court and could potentially face up to 30 years in prison, be required to pay restitution, and face a $1 million fine if convicted.

The case has shocked the local community and raised questions about Janssen’s credibility, as he goes from being a supposed victim of abduction to being accused of orchestrating a multi-million dollar fraud scheme.
