Garlin Gilchrist II, Michigan’s first Black lieutenant governor, has announced his candidacy for governor in the crowded Democratic primary for the 2026 race. A software engineer by trade, Gilchrist has worked closely with Governor Gretchen Whitmer and highlighted his ability to solve problems as an engineer in his campaign.
In his platform, Gilchrist plans to focus on expanding affordable housing and improving access to health care, particularly mental health services. He acknowledged the frustration among voters that led to Donald Trump’s victory in Michigan in the last election and stressed the importance of delivering results to address this dissatisfaction.
Despite hailing from Detroit, a Democratic stronghold, Gilchrist faces competition in the primary from Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson. However, he is viewed as a rising star in the Democratic Party and could potentially become the first Black governor of Michigan if elected.
While Lieutenant Governors in Michigan have struggled to ascend to the governor’s office in the past, Gilchrist remains optimistic about his chances and his ability to lead the state towards a brighter future. The primary winner will face tough competition in the general election, including potential Republican opponent Aric Nesbitt and independent candidate Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan. Governor Whitmer has remained neutral in the primary race, refusing to endorse any candidate.
