First Kangaroo Embryo Successfully Created Using IVF


Researchers in Australia have successfully created kangaroo embryos through in-vitro fertilization for the first time. This breakthrough has the potential to help save endangered species from extinction, especially marsupials which are mostly found in Australia. The researchers utilized their experience working with reproductive technologies in other animals to adapt IVF techniques to kangaroos, ultimately leading to the creation of embryos in the lab. This research will provide valuable insights into the unique development process of marsupial embryos, which differ from other mammals due to their short pregnancy and ability to go into suspended animation.

Australia has a high rate of mammal extinction, with at least 33 species disappearing since European settlement. The government initiated a “zero extinctions” plan in 2022 to protect species under threat, but the current conservation policies are deemed inadequate by experts. More than 2,200 species are classified as threatened with extinction in Australia, highlighting the urgent need for conservation efforts.

While kangaroos themselves are not endangered, the IVF breakthrough offers hope for preserving other endangered marsupial species like koalas, Tasmanian devils, and northern hairy-nosed wombats. By creating and freezing embryos, researchers can safeguard the unique genetics of these animals. This approach has previously been successful in preserving endangered species, such as in the case of the world’s first IVF rhino pregnancy in Italy.

Though the IVF breakthrough is a significant accomplishment, researchers acknowledge that there is still much to learn and discover in this field. Combining IVF with other conservation strategies can make a tangible difference in protecting species at risk of extinction.
