Michigan Attorney General warns federal employees about buyout offer.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is cautioning over 29,000 federal workers in the state to carefully consider the Trump administration’s “deferred resignation” program before making a decision. This program offers employees who voluntarily resign before Feb. 6 about eight months of salary. However, Attorney General Nessel warns that certain benefits may not be guaranteed for those who accept the buyout offer.

The Office of Personnel Management sent emails to federal workers, urging them to resign and find higher productivity jobs outside the government sector. Attorney General Nessel believes this offer is misleading and advises workers to read the fine print before signing any agreements. She also encourages employees represented by a union to consult with their labor representatives before making a decision.

Michigan is home to at least 29,000 federal workers as of December 2024, not including uniformed personnel or contractors. Other states like Arizona, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, and Washington have also issued warnings about the risks associated with the buyout offer.

Unions representing federal employees, such as the American Federation of Government Employees, have also cautioned their members about the uncertainty of benefits associated with accepting the deal. With various states and organizations advising caution, federal workers are being urged to carefully weigh their options before making a decision regarding the deferred resignation program.
