Man from Atlanta arrested in Michigan for murder at rest area in Arkansas


An Atlanta man, Darius Simmons, has been arrested in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in connection with the death of German Portillo-Batres at an Interstate 40 rest area near Ozark, Arkansas. Simmons faces charges of first-degree murder, aggravated robbery, theft of property, and failure to provide information of an accident involving injury. Portillo-Batres, 59, was found lying on the shoulder of the rest stop access road on January 4, 2025. The Arkansas State Police’s Criminal Investigation Division led the investigation, with felony arrest warrants issued for Simmons based on information gathered by special agents. U.S. Marshals apprehended Simmons in Michigan on January 31, 2025, and he is awaiting extradition to Arkansas. The Ozark Police Department and state authorities are continuing to investigate the case to bring justice to the victim and his family.
