A man from Clare County, Michigan, has been arrested for allegedly attempting to burn down his own house and causing destruction to multiple cars and sheds on his property. Cameron Hill, 36, was taken into custody on January 25 after starting several fires at his residence in Hayes Township. He has been charged with second degree arson and third degree arson.
The Harrison Fire Department responded to reports of a possible vehicle fire at Hill’s address on Fishing Site Road. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered multiple fires burning in the yard and saw Hill trying to ignite more. He set fire to several vehicles, two sheds, and attempted to burn down his own home by pouring gasoline inside.
Although Hill was not successful in completely burning down the house, it did sustain damage from the fire and smoke. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident. Hill was arrested and taken to the Clare County Jail, where he was arraigned in 80th District Court. His bond has been set at $1 million.
In Michigan, second degree arson involves willfully or maliciously damaging a dwelling by fire, regardless of occupancy, while third degree arson refers to intentionally burning a building or structure with contents valued at $20,000 or more. Regardless of ownership, the charges apply. The vehicles, sheds, and their contents were destroyed in the fires, according to authorities.
