What effect will term limits have on Michigan’s 2026 election?

Multiple high-profile Michigan politicians are set to be “termed out” in the upcoming 2026 election, according to the state constitution. This includes Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist II, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, and Attorney General Dana Nessel. Whitmer and Benson have both served two full terms in their respective positions, making them ineligible for re-election, while Gilchrist served as lieutenant governor for two terms alongside Whitmer. Nessel, the state’s first openly gay attorney general, will also be termed out but has not yet indicated her next move.

In addition to executive positions, term limits for Michigan state legislators were changed in the 2022 midterm election with the passing of Proposal 1, allowing a combined 12 years of service between the Michigan House and Senate.

At the federal level, U.S. senators do not have term limits and can serve an unlimited number of six-year terms. Michigan’s current senators include Elissa Slotkin and Gary Peters, who announced he will not be seeking re-election for a third term. Members of the U.S. House of Representatives also do not have term limits, serving two-year terms.

The upcoming 2026 election in Michigan will see significant changes in leadership with several high-profile politicians reaching their term limits.
