Protect Our Care Michigan warned about potential Medicaid funding cuts that could negatively impact various vulnerable groups like children, infants, rural communities, and seniors. With reports of a possible $2.3 trillion cut to Medicaid funding looming, the organization hosted a panel of experts to discuss the potential consequences. Medicaid is a crucial health insurance program in the country and Michigan, covering 3 million people in the state and 70 million nationwide. Despite being the largest spending category in the state budget, representing $24 billion out of Michigan’s $82 billion budget, Medicaid provides healthcare to millions of low-income adults and children in the state. The US Government Accountability Office (GOA) reported over $100 billion in improper payments in Medicare and Medicaid programs in FY 2023, highlighting the need to address improper payments and strengthen program integrity. Cuts to Medicaid could increase the financial burden on hospitals, exacerbate medical bankruptcy rates, and limit access to healthcare for patients with mental health conditions, among other consequences. Protect Our Care Michigan emphasized the importance of protecting access to quality, affordable healthcare through Medicaid and ensuring continued coverage for vulnerable populations. News Channel 3’s attempts to reach the office of Speaker of the House Matt Hall for comments on Medicaid budget cuts have not been successful.
