The Northern Illinois University women’s basketball team secured an 80-75 win over the Central Michigan Chippewas by shooting over 50 percent from the field and three-point line. Chelby Koker led the Huskies with 19 points and eight assists, becoming the fifth player in program history to surpass 400 career assists. The team utilized a 13-0 run in the first quarter to establish an early lead.
Despite Central Michigan closing the gap in the second and third quarters, NIU was able to maintain their advantage through consistent shooting and defensive efforts. The team demonstrated resilience and composure in weathering Central Michigan’s comebacks and ultimately secured their first home win in Mid-American Conference play.
NIU shot 50.9 percent from the field and 8-for-15 from the three-point arc, while Central Michigan outrebounded them 47-22. Madi Morson led all scorers with 26 points for the Chippewas, while Jess Lawson recorded a double-double with 17 points and 18 rebounds.
The Huskies will face off against Buffalo on Saturday, Feb. 1 before returning to the Convocation Center to play Kent State on Wednesday, Feb. 5 for National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
