Michigan prisoner’s mother pleads with governor to bring him home from death row in Alabama

Demetrius Frazier’s mother, Carol, delivered a letter and petition signatures to Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer asking her to intervene in her son’s upcoming execution in Alabama. Frazier, who confessed to the rape and murder of Pauline Brown in 1991, is facing death by gas suffocation next week. His mother and thousands of others have asked Whitmer to bring Frazier back to Michigan, where he also has life sentences. However, Attorney General Dana Nessel has denied bringing Frazier back to Michigan in a reply to his motion to dismiss.

Frazier was extradited to Alabama more than 10 years ago under former Governor Rick Snyder, with some claiming it was an unlawful transfer. Frazier’s legal team believes that if Governor Whitmer were to intervene and bring him back to Michigan to serve his life sentence, it could be possible. Frazier has numerous convictions in Michigan, including a life sentence for the murder of 14-year-old Crystal Kendrick in 1992.

Abraham Bonowitz of Death Penalty Action stated that former Governor Snyder abandoned Michigan’s ideals by making a secret deal to extradite Frazier to Alabama. He is urging Governor Whitmer to correct this perceived injustice and uphold the values expressed in Michigan’s constitution. Frazier and his supporters are hopeful that the governor will take action to prevent his execution in Alabama and allow him to serve his sentence in Michigan.
