Press Release: Michigan Department of Transportation Completes Major I-696 Construction in Oakland County
OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) – The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has officially reopened all lanes of Interstate 696 in Oakland County, marking the conclusion of a significant construction effort that has lasted several months. The thoroughfare, which is vital for local transit, has now restored all entry and exit ramps between I-275 and Lahser Road.
MDOT announced that while the main lanes are operational, construction barrels will remain along the shoulders as crews complete additional punch list tasks through the end of the year. Key components of the $275 million I-696 Restore the Reuther project included the reconstruction of roadways, the replacement of storm sewers, and renovations of several ramps, specifically at Orchard Lake Road, American Drive, Franklin Road, and Telegraph Road. This initiative is anticipated to support approximately 3,300 jobs in the region, reflecting its considerable economic impact.
Looking ahead, MDOT is set to initiate another I-696 project in 2025, which aims to rebuild the freeway from Lahser Road to I-75. This forthcoming project is expected to span three years, signaling continued investment in the state’s infrastructure.
As the holiday season approaches, residents can also expect an update on the Thanksgiving weather forecast. Local authorities urge the public to stay informed as they plan their travel and festive celebrations.
