Michigan State Tight End Jack Velling Hospitalized After Scary Injury in Game Against Purdue
EAST LANSING, MI – Michigan State University’s starting tight end Jack Velling experienced a concerning injury during Friday’s matchup against Purdue, leading to a dramatic scene on the field. During the Spartans’ opening offensive drive, Velling was struck hard by Purdue safety Dillon Thieneman while attempting to receive a pass. The collision resulted in an incomplete pass as Velling was left in visible distress on the ground.
Medical personnel quickly rushed to his aid, signaling for a stretcher after assessing the situation. For approximately five minutes, Velling remained down before receiving medical attention, which included the removal of his jersey. He was eventually placed on a backboard and transported off the field via cart, offering a thumbs-up to the cheering crowd as he left Spartan Stadium.
Velling, a junior who previously set an Oregon State record for touchdown receptions by a tight end, had transferred to Michigan State in the offseason under coach Jonathan Smith. Prior to the injury, he had made a significant impact this season with 30 receptions totaling 323 yards. Just before the injury, Velling recorded an 11-yard catch.
Following Velling’s departure, quarterback Aidan Chiles quickly rallied the Spartans, throwing a 7-yard touchdown pass to Montorie Foster, which gave Michigan State a 7-3 lead late in the first quarter.
Fans and teammates are hopeful for Velling’s speedy recovery following the unsettling incident. The Spartans currently hold a record of 4-6 and are striving to improve their standing in the Big Ten as they navigate the remainder of the season.
