Mike ‘Flagman’ Bowen Recognized as Michigan’s Veteran of the Year

Veteran Honored for Lifelong Dedication to Fallen Soldiers

FLUSHING, MI – Mike “Flagman” Bowen, a Vietnam War-era veteran, has been named Michigan’s Veteran of the Year for his relentless dedication to honoring fallen and missing soldiers. With over 40 years of service and nearly 78,000 miles run since 1982, Bowen’s journey began when he met a grieving mother at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall. This encounter inspired him to run a mile carrying a black POW/MIA flag for each name on the wall marked as missing.

The Genesee County Board of Commissioners recognized Bowen for receiving the award from the Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, which celebrates veterans who showcase dedication to civic responsibility. Bowen enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1968 and served in Germany while mourning the loss of eight friends in Vietnam. Carrying survivor’s guilt, he initiated a personal mission to honor the fallen, including running miles for over 58,000 soldiers killed in Vietnam and those lost on September 11, 2001.

Despite challenges such as bad weather, knee surgeries, and a cancer diagnosis, Bowen has persisted in his mission, participating in over 50 marathons and numerous local events, firmly believing he will continue "until my heart stops beating."

His community impact extends beyond running; he actively engages with veterans, ensuring no one is left behind. Director of Veterans Services Derrick L. Britton praised Bowen’s unwavering commitment, citing his consistent presence at veteran events and funerals at the Great Lakes National Cemetery. Bowen’s dedication has inspired many in the community, showcasing the profound impact one individual can have in honoring the sacrifices of others.
