Seven people presumed dead following gangway collapse in Georgia

A tragic incident occurred on Sapelo Island, Georgia, where a gangway on a ferry dock collapsed, resulting in at least seven people believed to have died and numerous others injured. The collapse occurred during a celebration of Gullah Geechee culture organized by the Sepalo Island Cultural and Revitalization Society. The U.S. Coast Guard and various state and local agencies responded to the scene, deploying boats and helicopters for search and rescue operations. A reunification center was set up at Elm Grove Baptist Church for those affected by the incident. President Joe Biden offered federal resources to assist the Gullah Geechee community during this devastating time. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp expressed heartbreak over the tragedy and asked for prayers for those involved in the accident. Sapelo Island is a historic site known for its cultural significance, and the seaworthy dock where the gangway collapsed is used by public ferry vessels, the University of Georgia’s research trawler, and smaller boats. An investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the collapse.
