The United States launches strikes on Houthi weapon storage sites in Yemen

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced that B-2 bombers and other aircraft struck five underground weapons storage locations in Yemen controlled by the Iranian-backed Houthi rebel group. The facilities housed various weapons components used by the Houthis to target civilian and military vessels in the region. This marked the first time the U.S. used B-2 bombers in strikes against the Houthis.

The Houthis, supported by Iran, have been launching attacks on civilian vessels in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden in response to the conflict in Gaza. The U.S. responded with airstrikes in January and continued with additional strikes authorized by President Joe Biden to degrade the Houthis’ capabilities to engage in destabilizing behavior and protect U.S. forces and personnel in the region.

The ongoing conflict in Yemen has caused extreme hardship, with the United Nations describing the humanitarian crisis as the largest in the world. More than 18 million people in Yemen rely on humanitarian assistance to survive. The Houthis seized control of Yemen’s capital in 2014, leading to a protracted conflict with devastating consequences for the civilian population.

The attacks on the Houthi weapons storage facilities aim to prevent further attacks on commercial shipping and protect critical waterways in the region. The U.S. remains committed to addressing the destabilizing actions of the Houthis and defending its interests in the region.
