A new poll conducted by the Howard University Initiative on Public Opinion of 981 likely Black voters in battleground states shows that Vice President Kamala Harris maintains a wide lead over former President Donald Trump among Black voters. Harris is supported by 84% of likely Black voters, while Trump has the support of 8%, with an additional 8% undecided. The poll also reveals that 66% of Black voters are very excited to vote in the upcoming election, with 35% still undecided about their choice.
While Harris maintains strong support among Democrats and Republicans, there has been a small shift among independent Black voters with Trump’s support increasing to 18%, up from 12% in September. The poll also shows that Harris is leading Trump by 81 points among Black women and 59 points among Black men.
The top issues for Black voters in the election are democracy/voting rights/elections, economy/jobs/wages, abortion/women’s health care/women’s rights, and inflation/cost of living. There are differences among men and women, with men prioritizing democracy and the economy, while women are more focused on abortion.
The survey was conducted from Oct. 2-8 through text-to-web online surveys and telephone interviews with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.2 percentage points for likely voters. Overall, the poll indicates that Harris continues to have strong support among Black voters in battleground states.
