Relatives of Menendez brothers plan rally outside Los Angeles courthouse while District Attorney considers resentencing options

The extended family of Erik and Lyle Menendez, who were convicted of killing their parents almost three decades ago, is expected to gather outside a Los Angeles courthouse as the district attorney considers resentencing the brothers. The family members, along with their defense lawyer Mark Geragos and celebrity advocate Rosie O’Donnell, will hold a news conference to address the matter. The district attorney, George Gascón, who is reviewing the case, will not attend the rally. The Menendez brothers, who were sentenced to life in prison without parole, are cautiously optimistic about the prosecutors’ review.

The case gained widespread attention in 1989 and has recently garnered public interest due to the release of a Netflix miniseries and documentary that detail the brothers’ claims of long-term abuse by their father. The brothers argued they acted in self-defense, while the prosecution claimed they were motivated by greed. The family members speaking at the news conference include relatives of the slain parents and O’Donnell, who is one of the many celebrities advocating for the brothers’ release.

Despite public support, the decision ultimately lies with the judicial system. Gascón, who was elected on a reformist platform, has already resentenced over 300 individuals during his term, with only four reoffending. However, recent polls show him trailing his challenger in the upcoming election. Loyola Law School professor Laurie Levenson emphasized that public opinion can influence the case, but the final decision will be made in court.
