Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has not taken calls from Vice President Kamala Harris regarding storm recovery efforts following Hurricane Helene’s impact on the state. This decision was made because the calls were deemed as political in nature. DeSantis also did not meet with President Joe Biden, who visited north Florida to survey the storm damage. The White House invited DeSantis to join Biden at the event, but DeSantis was holding a press conference elsewhere. DeSantis has been in contact with Federal Emergency Management Director Deanne Criswell for assistance. Meanwhile, other governors have praised the federal response to hurricanes, with Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp and South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster both commending Biden’s assistance. DeSantis sent Florida resources to North Carolina to aid in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. As Florida braces for Hurricane Milton, expected to make landfall midweek, DeSantis and his team are focused on storm preparation and response efforts. Former President Donald Trump has also made comments about Hurricane Helene, including criticizing Harris for posting what he claimed was a staged photo. Despite these political dynamics, DeSantis and his team remain focused on managing the aftermath of recent hurricanes impacting the state.
