Ex-Singapore Minister Sentenced to One Year in Jail for Accepting Gifts in Landmark Case

Singapore’s former minister S. Iswaran has been sentenced to 12 months in prison for obstructing justice and receiving over $300,000 worth of gifts. This is the first time a former cabinet member has been jailed in a city-state known for its clean governance. Iswaran, who had held various cabinet portfolios for 13 years, pleaded guilty to improperly receiving gifts and obstructing justice. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong expressed disappointment at the case but emphasized the importance of maintaining clean government and politics.

Property tycoon Ong Beng Seng, who gave Iswaran tickets to various events, will also be charged in court. The sentence received by Iswaran was more severe than what the prosecution had sought, with the judge emphasizing the impact on public trust that Iswaran’s actions had. The case has shocked Singapore, a country known for its efficient bureaucracy and clean governance.

While Singapore is highly ranked in terms of lack of corruption, Wong acknowledged that there will always be individuals tempted by corruption. The last corruption case involving a Singaporean minister was in 1986. Iswaran initially claimed innocence but later pleaded guilty to the charges against him. He will begin his jail term on Monday after being allowed to remain on bail for a few days. The charges against Iswaran involved receiving gifts from businessmen he had official dealings with during his time as transport minister.
