Australian court imposes fine on Musk’s X for defying anti-child abuse inquiry ruling

A court in Australia upheld a fine of 610,500 Australian dollars against Elon Musk’s X for failing to cooperate with a request from the eSafety Commissioner for information on anti-child-abuse practices. X, previously known as Twitter, had argued that it was not required to respond to the notice as it had been merged into a new Musk-controlled entity. The court’s ruling highlighted the importance of foreign companies complying with regulatory obligations in Australia. The eSafety Commissioner has also initiated civil proceedings against X for noncompliance. This is not the first clash between Musk and the Australian internet safety regulator, as X had previously challenged an order to remove certain posts. Musk had labeled the order as censorship and suggested it was part of a larger effort by the World Economic Forum to impose global eSafety rules. X did not immediately comment on the court’s decision.
