Israeli strikes on a central Beirut medical centre have resulted in the deaths of at least six people, marking Israel’s deadliest day in Lebanon in a year of clashes with Hezbollah. The strikes targeted a medical centre belonging to the Hezbollah-linked Islamic Health Organization, with additional missile attacks hitting other areas in the city. The IDF warned of further strikes throughout the night, leading to residents fleeing the area.
Lebanese health officials reported a total of six deaths and seven injuries in the attack, with an additional 46 people killed in Israeli strikes over the previous 24 hours. These attacks followed Iran’s firing of over 180 missiles into Israel, escalating tensions in the region. US President Joe Biden expressed opposition to an Israeli attack on Iranian nuclear sites as efforts to contain the conflict intensified.
In related developments, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah had reportedly agreed to a ceasefire just before being assassinated by Israel, according to Lebanese officials. The Emir of Qatar criticized Israel, accusing the country of carrying out a “collective genocide” in the region. The conflict has also extended to Gaza, where more than 70 people were killed in Israeli attacks on Wednesday.
Amidst escalating military actions and retaliations, the region faces uncertainty as airstrikes continue to target various locations. The situation remains volatile as international leaders work to negotiate a ceasefire and prevent further bloodshed in the conflict-affected areas.
