Russian drone attacks result in the death of eight at medical centre in Sumy, Ukraine during Russia-Ukraine conflict

A deadly drone attack on a hospital in Sumy, Ukraine has left at least eight people dead, with Ukrainian officials blaming Russia for the strikes. The first attack occurred on Saturday morning, followed by a second attack as patients and staff were evacuating the area. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russia used Shahed drones in the attack, injuring eleven people. The city of Sumy is located near the border with Russia’s Kursk region, where Ukraine launched an offensive on August 6. The air force of Ukraine claimed to have shot down 69 of 73 Russian drones launched overnight.

Zelenskyy had recently visited the United States to seek support for Ukraine, meeting with President Joe Biden and Vice Presidential candidate Kamala Harris to outline his “victory plan” for ending the conflict on Ukraine’s terms. As part of this plan, Biden announced an additional $8 billion in military aid for Ukraine, including long-range strike capabilities to enhance their defense. The Russian Defense Ministry stated that they had shot down several Ukrainian drones over border regions in response to the escalating tensions. The attacks on the hospital in Sumy have drawn condemnation from both Ukrainian and international authorities, highlighting the ongoing crisis in the region.
