UNIFIL mission describes current situation in Lebanon as more challenging than during 2006 war

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) is facing unprecedented challenges as tensions escalate between Lebanon and Israel. Established in 1978 with over 10,000 peacekeepers from 50 countries, UNIFIL patrols the Blue Line border and works to de-escalate conflicts. Following Israel’s recent attacks on Lebanon, over 600 people have been killed and 90,000 displaced, leading to a humanitarian crisis. The intensity of bombardments has reached levels not seen since 2006, disrupting UNIFIL’s activities. Despite Israel’s preparations for a ground invasion, UNIFIL remains present and continues its mediation efforts. The mission calls for the implementation of resolution 1701 to establish a weapon-free zone and increase Lebanese army presence in the South. Mediation efforts are ongoing with both Lebanese and Israeli authorities and other parties involved. The mission also provides humanitarian aid to the local population, including medical assistance. The US and France have proposed a 21-day ceasefire, which Israel rejected, opting to continue fighting Hezbollah. UNIFIL emphasizes the importance of finding a solution to prevent regional conflict. Though facing a serious situation, the mission remains focused on de-escalation and supporting those affected by the conflict.
