Tiger Woods’ new logo sparks trademark dispute

Tiger Woods’ new logo for his Sun Day Red golf apparel line is facing a trademark dispute with Tigeraire, a company that makes cooling products for athletes. Tigeraire has filed a notice of opposition with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, claiming that Sun Day Red and Tiger Woods have unlawfully used their design for branding. TaylorMade Golf, the company behind Sun Day Red, has expressed confidence in the trademark’s protection.

Sun Day Red was launched in May as Woods’ new apparel line after his long partnership with Nike. The brand pays tribute to Woods wearing red on Sundays and his 15 major wins. Despite the ongoing trademark dispute, TaylorMade CEO David Abeles stated that Sun Day Red has been well received in the North American market.

Woods’ spokesperson declined to comment on the matter, and he and the Sun Day Red team have 40 days to respond to the notice of opposition. According to trademark attorney Josh Gerben, the opposition proceeding will pause the trademark application, but it is unlikely to affect future production of the line. Gerben expects the case to settle before going to trial, as Tigeraire’s filing gives them a seat at the negotiation table. Ultimately, Tigeraire’s filing has the potential to lead to a resolution between all parties involved in the dispute.
