Lucy Letby found baby under her care covered in faeces, parents discover

The parents of Child J, a vulnerable newborn girl, expressed their disgust at finding her covered in her own feces while under the care of nurse Lucy Letby at the Countess of Chester hospital. The inquiry into the murder of babies at the hospital heard that Child J, who was at high risk of infection after bowel surgery, experienced unexplained collapses while on the hospital’s neonatal unit.

Child J’s parents described finding their daughter in a cot with her stoma removed and covered in a soiled towel, which they felt showed a lack of care and humanity. They made a complaint about the incident, but felt dismissed by the ward manager, Eirian Powell.

Letby, who is serving a life sentence for the murder of multiple babies, was also charged with attempting to kill Child J but a jury was unable to reach a verdict. The parents had concerns about their daughter’s care on the neonatal unit, contrasting it with the meticulous attention to detail at Alder Hey hospital.

The parents also raised concerns about Letby’s role at the hospital and demanded accountability from hospital executives. Letby was found guilty of attempting to murder another baby, Child K, by tampering with her breathing tube, leading to her death. Child K’s mother criticized hospital executives for failing to act sooner on concerns about Letby and called for accountability to prevent similar incidents in the future.
