Former President Donald Trump has accused the Justice Department and FBI of mishandling and downplaying a recent assassination attempt on his life. He claimed that the suspect’s charges were too lenient and mentioned a conflict of interest. Trump suggested that Florida should handle the investigation instead, as the state would take it more seriously. Republican Governor Ron DeSantis has agreed to lead the investigation.
In response, the Justice Department accused the suspect, Ryan Routh, of gun-related charges and attempted assassination of a political candidate. Routh admitted in a note that he intended to kill Trump.
Meanwhile, Democratic nominee Kamala Harris has garnered the endorsement of over 700 former national security and military officials, who criticized Trump’s leadership and supported Harris’ record on national security.
As the government faced a potential shutdown, the Republican House speaker agreed to a short-term funding deal that does not include the legislation demanded by Trump to require proof of citizenship for voters. This compromise averts a shutdown and provides additional emergency funds for the Secret Service to protect both Trump and Harris. The move was seen as a snub to Trump’s demands.
Overall, the political landscape is heating up as the election draws near, with tensions rising between Trump and the Justice Department, and the endorsement of Harris by national security officials shifting the support in her favor.
