Former USC standout Reggie Bush files lawsuit over money he claims school and others received from his likeness 20 years ago

Reggie Bush, the former football star from USC, has filed a lawsuit against his school, the NCAA, and the Pac-12 to recoup money made on his name, image, and likeness during his college career. Bush’s attorneys claim that he should be paid to address ongoing injustices related to the exploitation of his name and image while playing for USC. The lawsuit is also aimed at setting a precedent for fair treatment of all college athletes and ensuring they are recognized, compensated, and treated fairly for their contributions.

Despite forfeiting his Heisman Trophy in 2010 due to sanctions related to off-field dealings, Bush had the honor restored earlier this year. He is also pursuing a separate defamation lawsuit against the NCAA over their characterization of the circumstances surrounding his troubles. The new lawsuit may impact Bush’s relationship with USC, which recently welcomed him back and returned his Heisman Trophy.

Bush is not the only former athlete seeking compensation for their college careers under the new rules in college athletics. Others, such as former Michigan stars Denard Robinson and Braylon Edwards, as well as members of NC State’s 1983 NCAA basketball championship team, have also filed lawsuits against the NCAA and other organizations seeking compensation for use of their names, images, and likenesses.

The NCAA has recently changed its rules to allow athletes to profit from sponsorship and endorsement deals, resulting in several lawsuits and settlement agreements in relation to name, image, and likeness compensation for college athletes.
