A roadside bomb hit a convoy of foreign diplomats in northwest Pakistan, killing a police officer in their security detail. The diplomats were visiting the Swat valley area on the invitation of a local chamber of commerce. Ambassadors from several countries were among those in the convoy and were unharmed. Pakistani authorities condemned the attack and promptly rescued and moved the diplomats to Islamabad. No one claimed responsibility for the attack. The Pakistani army and police closed roads and imposed a curfew in the area while conducting a search operation. Islamist militants have long been active in the Swat valley, and attacks have intensified since late 2022. In 2012, Malala Yousafzai was shot and seriously wounded in the valley by militants. The Pakistani President condemned the attack, emphasizing that terrorist elements are enemies not only of the country and nation but of humanity itself. Security arrangements for foreign diplomats in Pakistan are usually strict due to the ongoing threat of terrorism.
