Florida deputy arrested for manslaughter after shooting girlfriend while dry-firing gun

A former Florida sheriff’s deputy, Leslie Boileau, was arrested for manslaughter after accidentally shooting his girlfriend in their home in Ocala. Boileau called 911 after the incident, reporting that the shooting was accidental while handling and dry-firing firearms. Boileau told authorities that he accidentally discharged a loaded round from a rifle, resulting in the fatal shooting of his girlfriend. He mentioned that she had asked him to teach her how to use the gun. The Ocala Police Department executed a search warrant and found physical evidence corroborating Boileau’s account, leading to his arrest for manslaughter. Boileau, who was a deputy with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office for eight years, was terminated immediately after the shooting. The Sheriff’s Office expressed sadness for the victim’s family and offered support to the police department as they conducted their investigation. The incident was called a tragic one by Police Chief Mike Balken, and Sheriff Billy Woods noted that the actions of one officer could impact the entire law enforcement community. The gun used in the shooting was not Boileau’s work firearm.
