Super Typhoon Yagi leaves trail of death in China, Philippines, and Vietnam as death toll rises to four

Super Typhoon Yagi, the most powerful storm in Asia this year, made landfall in northern Vietnam after causing devastation in Hainan, China, and the Philippines. The storm, with winds of up to 160 kph, killed at least four people in Vietnam and dozens more were injured or missing at sea. Haiphong, an industrial city with a population of 2 million, was among the hardest-hit areas. The storm caused power outages, smashed windows, and damaged buildings, leaving thousands of trees uprooted. In Hainan, more than 800,000 homes lost power and roads were flooded.

Vietnam evacuated over 50,000 people from coastal areas and deployed 450,000 military personnel. The government also suspended operations at several airports and closed high schools in 12 provinces. Public transport in Hanoi was suspended, with warnings of heavy flooding in the city center. Residents described the storm as unprecedented and dangerous, with winds strong enough to blow a person over.

Scientists attribute the increasing strength of typhoons to climate change, and Typhoon Yagi is the latest example of this trend. The storm is named after the Japanese word for goat and has left a trail of destruction in its path, highlighting the need for countries to prepare for more severe weather events in the future.
