Japan hit by Typhoon Shanshan’s powerful winds and heavy rainfall

A typhoon named Shanshan hit southern Japan, causing torrential rain and strong winds. At least three people have died and concerns about flooding, landslides, and damage are growing. The typhoon made landfall near Satsumasendai in southern Kyushu, where up to 23.6 inches of rain could fall in 24 hours. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued the highest-level warnings for most of the country, especially the southern prefectures of Kyushu. People in warned areas were advised to seek shelter at community centers and other public facilities.

Shanshan was still lingering over the southern island of Kyushu, moving north at 9 miles per hour with sustained winds of 89 mph and higher gusts. A landslide in the central city of Gamagori caused by heavy rain killed three residents and injured two others. In Amami, one person was knocked down by a wind gust while riding a motorcycle.

The typhoon is slowly making its way north through the Japanese archipelago, threatening floods and landslides. Disaster Management Minister Yoshifumi Matsumura warned of “unprecedented” levels of violent winds, high waves, storm surges, and heavy rain. Hundreds of domestic flights were canceled, and train services were suspended. Postal and delivery services in the Kyushu region have been halted, and supermarkets and stores planned to close. Officials are urging people, especially older adults, to take shelter whenever there is a safety concern.
