Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will not be able to remove his name from the ballot in Michigan or Wisconsin, both key swing states, in November’s election. The Michigan secretary of state’s office stated that minor party candidates cannot withdraw once nominated, so Kennedy’s name will remain on the ballot. Wisconsin’s state election commission also rejected Kennedy’s request to remove his name, citing state statute that allows qualified candidates to not decline nomination except in the case of death.
Kennedy had suspended his independent presidential bid and endorsed former President Donald Trump, but did not formally end his run. Some have criticized Kennedy and Trump for playing games with the election by keeping Kennedy on the ballot despite his endorsement of Trump. Overall, this decision means that Kennedy’s name will still appear on the ballot in both Michigan and Wisconsin come November.
