The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is set to enhance its research capabilities with the construction of a new research vessel, the R/V Steelhead II. Awarded to Moran Iron Works of Onaway, the vessel is expected to be on the water for the 2026 field season. The decision to award the construction contract to a Michigan-based company follows a competitive bid process and is aligned with the state Legislature’s funding for the project.
The new 66-foot vessel will replace the aging survey vessel Steelhead and include advanced technology, improved crew safety measures, and solar energy capabilities. The Steelhead II will be powered by two EPA Tier III diesel engines that utilize high-efficiency emission control technology, reducing its carbon footprint. The upgrades aim to provide more precise fisheries data on Lake Michigan and ensure the safety and efficiency of the crew.
Moran Iron Works expressed pride in being involved in another important project for the Great Lakes region, with the company’s founder and CEO, Tom Moran, highlighting the skill and efficiency of their team. The DNR Fisheries Division is looking forward to the completion of the new vessel, which will signify a significant improvement over the current vessel in terms of operation, safety, and crew accommodations. The R/V Steelhead II represents a step towards modernizing research efforts on Lake Michigan and enhancing environmental sustainability in the region.
