New Cash Program Launching in Kalamazoo Next Year for Mothers and Babies

Kalamazoo is set to launch a groundbreaking program, Rx Kids, that provides cash payments to expectant mothers and families with babies. Started in Flint earlier this year, this initiative aims to help eliminate infant poverty by giving moms $1,500 mid-pregnancy and $500 a month for the first year of the infant’s life. The program has received $20 million in state funding to expand across Michigan.

Dr. Mona Hanna, the director of Rx Kids, emphasized the importance of proactive and collective care for children, highlighting the financial struggles families face during pregnancy and the first year of a child’s life. Philanthropic support will allow the program to be accessible to all, regardless of income.

The Kalamazoo program, supported by various foundations and community organizations, aims to provide additional support to families during a vulnerable time. A survey conducted by the YWCA Kalamazoo found that expectant mothers expressed the need for extra financial assistance to cover expenses related to raising a child.

With a goal of reducing infant mortality and addressing poverty rates, Kalamazoo Rx Kids is seen as a vital resource for families in need. The success of similar cash benefit programs, like the pandemic-era expanded Child Tax Credit, has shown that direct financial assistance can lift families out of poverty. The statewide expansion of Rx Kids is a positive step toward providing crucial support to families across Michigan.
