Former Michigan football staffer, Connor Stalions, has spoken out for the first time in the Netflix documentary “Sign Stealer” following his resignation amid a scandal last season. Stalions, who was part of former coach Jim Harbaugh’s staff at Michigan, addressed his role in deciphering signs from opposing teams. The NCAA recently issued a notice of allegations about his operation, focusing on impermissible in-person scouting and sign stealing.
Stalions denied attending the Central Michigan-Michigan State game in 2023 when asked by NCAA investigators and claimed that he did not direct anyone to record opposing teams’ signals. Despite allegations of sending people to digitally record games, Stalions insisted that he had already memorized the signals. He shared his process of decoding signs by creating a database of images with various signals.
The documentary also sheds light on Stalions’ background as a volunteer student coach at Navy and his involvement with the Michigan football program, during which he was suspended and later resigned following the NCAA investigation. Stalions mentioned his experiences with Harbaugh and receiving a game ball for his role in deciphering signals after a win over Iowa in 2022.
Stalions, who now volunteers as a defensive coordinator at Detroit Mumford High School, expressed his desire to continue pursuing a career in football. The documentary, produced by SpringHill Entertainment, owned by LeBron James and Maverick Carter, portrays Stalions’ side of the story amidst the ongoing NCAA investigation. Harbaugh, who is now coaching the Los Angeles Chargers, has denied any involvement in impermissible scouting practices. Michigan, the defending national champions, will kick off their new season against Fresno State on Saturday night.
