At least two people were killed in central Ukraine after a missile strike hit a civilian infrastructure building in Kryvyi Rih on Monday night. The governor of the Dnipropetrovsk region described the building as “wiped out”, while another person died in south-eastern Zaporizhzhia due to Russian attacks. Ukraine’s air defense systems were activated to repel further Russian bombardments, following the firing of hundreds of drones and missiles earlier on Monday that killed at least seven people and damaged the energy grid.
In response to the attack, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called for more air defense support from Western allies and urged the lifting of restrictions on using Western weapons to strike deep into Russian territory. The Ukrainian air force commander reported that Russia had launched 127 missiles, with 102 intercepted, and also launched 109 drones. The prime minister stated that 15 regions had sustained damage.
The US President Joe Biden condemned Russia’s attack on Ukraine, calling it “outrageous”. Meanwhile, NATO member Poland reported a violation of its airspace by a Russian drone during the bombardment against Ukraine. In Ukraine’s Donbas region, Zelenskiy announced plans to strengthen the eastern strategic hub of Pokrovsk, which Russian forces are attempting to capture.
The situation remains tense as further attacks could escalate the conflict. The targeting of civilian infrastructure, energy facilities, and oil refineries has raised concerns about war crimes being committed. The search for survivors and assessments of the damages caused by the attacks are ongoing, as global leaders and organizations condemn Russia’s actions and call for an end to the aggression.
