Michigan football has had a tumultuous past two years, experiencing both success on the field and off-field scandals and investigations. Former head coach Jim Harbaugh was recently hit with a four-year show-cause penalty and one-year suspension due to recruiting violations that occurred during the COVID-19 dead period. Harbaugh has since left Michigan to coach the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers, with offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore stepping up to replace him. The program has also dealt with other scandals, including suspensions of coaches and resignations of staff.
Michigan’s football team managed to excelled on the field, despite the off-field distractions, winning the national championship in January 2024. The team’s success led to accusations of off-field issues being overcome with Harbaugh asserting the team’s innocence. However, the aftermath of the championship victory saw Harbaugh leaving for the NFL and taking several assistants with him. A series of staff changes followed, including the resignation of Greg Scruggs and the arrest and subsequent resignation of Denard Robinson.
In August 2024, an NCAA Notice of Allegations was leaked, revealing potential violations by Moore and other staff members, including connection to the sign-stealing scandal. Harbaugh was hit with a one-year suspension and a four-year show-cause sanction for recruiting violations during a dead period in 2021. Despite the off-field turmoil, Michigan football continues to navigate through the challenges and strive for success on and off the field.
