Second gentleman Doug Emhoff will be campaigning for his wife, Vice President Kamala Harris, in Grand Rapids on Thursday, Aug. 29, marking his third campaign-related trip to Michigan this year. This visit will be Emhoff’s first stop in the state since Harris became the Democratic Party’s frontrunner for the White House. Emhoff previously campaigned alongside First Lady Jill Biden on a reproductive rights-themed tour in May and campaigned in Flint and Clawson in June.
Emhoff’s visit on Thursday will be part of a busy campaign schedule in Michigan this week, with former President Donald Trump planning to campaign at a steel manufacturing facility in Potterville on the same day. Trump, who campaigned in Howell last week, is making a return visit to deliver remarks in Detroit before his appearance in Potterville. Trump’s running mate, U.S. Sen. J.D. Vance, will also be campaigning in Big Rapids on Tuesday.
Michigan is considered a key battleground state in the upcoming election, with both parties making efforts to secure victory in the state. The last candidate to win the presidency but lose the Michigan vote was President George W. Bush in 2004. With Michigan playing a crucial role in determining the outcome of the election, candidates are focusing their efforts on capturing the state’s support.
