Members of the UN Security Council express concern over possibility of full-scale conflict following assassination of Haniyeh in Iran | Updates on Israel-Palestine tensions

Countries at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) have united to condemn the assassination of Hamas’s political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Iran and have called for diplomatic efforts to prevent a potential all-out war in the Middle East. The emergency meeting of the UNSC came amidst escalating tensions in the region, with Iran and Hamas holding Israel responsible for the attack on Haniyeh in Tehran.

The assassination of Haniyeh followed the killing of Hezbollah’s top military commander Fuad Shukr by Israel in Beirut. The attack was claimed to be in retaliation for a rocket assault in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights that caused the death of 12 children and young people from the Druze community.

Various UNSC member countries have spoken out against the escalating violence, with Palestine calling for international intervention to prevent Israel from plunging the Middle East into chaos. Iran has also condemned Israel and called for sanctions to be imposed on the country.

The United States denied any involvement in the attacks and emphasized the need to prevent a broader war. Israel urged the UNSC to condemn Iran for its alleged support of terrorism and Hezbollah. However, Lebanon and Syria dismissed these claims and accused Israel of aggression.

China, Russia, and Japan have called for a ceasefire and increased diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation of the conflict. France and the United Kingdom have also stressed the need for peace talks and a two-state solution in the region.

The assassination of Haniyeh has sparked fears of a potential all-out war in the Middle East, with countries at the UNSC urging for immediate action to de-escalate tensions and prevent further bloodshed.
