Highly touted running back recruit Donovan Edwards has issued a stern challenge to the running backs currently on the Michigan football team. The five-star recruit has made it clear that he is coming to Ann Arbor to compete for playing time and is not shying away from the challenge.
Edwards is ranked as the No. 3 running back in the nation and No. 33 overall in the 2021 recruiting class, according to 247Sports. He has received offers from top programs such as Alabama, Georgia, and Oklahoma, but ultimately chose to commit to Michigan.
The Detroit native is not lacking in confidence as he prepares to join the Wolverines. In an interview with 247Sports, Edwards stated, “I feel like I can come in and compete right away. I feel like I can help the team.” He added that he is looking forward to pushing the current running backs on the team to elevate their game.
Michigan’s running back room currently features Zach Charbonnet, Hassan Haskins, and Blake Corum, among others. Charbonnet led the team in rushing yards last season with 726 yards and 11 touchdowns. Haskins and Corum also made significant contributions to the team’s rushing attack.
With Edwards entering the mix, the competition for playing time in the Michigan backfield is expected to be fierce. Head coach Jim Harbaugh will likely have a difficult decision to make when it comes to distributing carries among his talented stable of running backs.
It remains to be seen how Edwards will fare in his first season with the Wolverines, but one thing is certain: he is determined to make an impact and will not back down from the challenge of earning playing time in a crowded backfield. Michigan football fans can look forward to an exciting battle for the starting running back position this upcoming season.
